After an Alaskan cruise and over 1,370 miles along the West Coast, I MADE IT TO CALIFORNIA. As I unpack and start repacking (which seems to be the theme of life these days), I decided to take a writing break to share some highlights of my trip(s) down the West Coast. Starting with Portland! Portland restaurants win the gamesThere’s so much to love about Portland. Tax-free shopping, the ’90’s fashion and hairstyles that are alive and well, the beautiful Rose Garden, and, of course, the plethora of restaurants and breweries. I know that I have a lot of traveling ahead of me, but as of this moment – Portland wins the restaurant games. I know that New York, LA, and even Seattle have some top notch food. So what puts Portland at the top for restaurants? Somehow every Portland restaurant I’ve ever visited, not only has delicious, authentic food but everything from the decorations to ambiance all blend together to give each restaurant its own unique culinary identity unlike any other I’ve yet experienced in my travels. For example, take a moment and think of your favorite dish in the whole world. Then imagine yourself eating that dish in the chef’s dining room/living room. I’ll say mine is a bowl of Chinese rice cake noodles made by my grandma and we’re sitting around her dining room table. That’s what it’s like to walk into a restaurant in Portland. You’re sitting there eating tacos in a Mexican restaurant and that along with your surroundings make you feel like you’ve been transported to Baja. I’m not sure how they do it. There’s most likely a restaurant consultant company that designs most of Portland’s restaurants. Maybe I’ll research that job someday when I return… For now, I’ll just enjoy the magical retreat of eating in Portland.
